Howard Backen's passion for design and community has set a strong foundation that guides us forward. Beginning with the founding of BAR in 1967, Howard went on to establish Backen & Gillam alongside Jim Gillam in 1996, which eventually evolved into Backen & Backen with his wife, Ann. Across every chapter of his career, Howard's impact on architecture and the spaces he shaped has been profound. Known for his warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication, Howard approached every project with a deep sense of purpose. His belief in the harmony between design, nature, and well-being has left a lasting legacy, one that resonates through each structure he created and the team he influenced.

While we deeply feel the loss of Howard, we find inspiration in the path he left us. His spirit continues to motivate our team, bringing care, innovation, and excellence in architectural creativity and environmental stewardship to every project.

Under the direction of partners John Taft, Tony Selko, and Tom Spoja, who bring a combined 75 years of experience to the firm, we are honored to carry Howard's work forward.
